Biology

Home

Biology is the field of study of living beings and organisms, as well as their components, functions, and different behaviours. It consists of microscopical aspects such as proteins, genetics, and cells' function and structures, but also extends to bigger aspects such as organs, body systems, and ecology throughout the large environments.

Biology is intertwined in our everyday lives and impact our perception, understanding, and interactions of humans and their environments, other living beings, and themselves vastly. The studies of DNA, genealogy, cells and proteins help humans understand living beings, including themselves, at a small scale and be able to fine tune and treat issues that arise from it. DNA analysis could determine the ancestry and relatives of individuals, including animals and plants. The understanding of single-celled organisms and viruses help us combat different diseases and develop vaccines and cures that are crucial for public health today. Without the study of biology, the mortality rate of humans would've definitely stayed the same as what it had been centuries ago.

Tying to the same topic, biology is also crucial for medicine, especially when paired with topics of chemistry and organic chemistry. All of the medicine we have today are built on biochemistry, a combination of organic chemistry with biology that is especially prominent in research and development of technologies regarding the compounds in the body and technology to affect the bodily functions (usually in a positive way).

Moreover, the applications of Biology also covers environmental, ecological, and conservational aspects. With biology, we are able to understand animals, plants, and how they work together to form an ecosystem. This is especially important nowadays with conservation efforts and the negative effects of climate change being an increasing threat to the Earth and wildlife.

Resources

Khan Academy

Khan Academy has already been featured in both subject pages, but it also teaches biology very throughly and in a way that's extremely easy to understand! Not only does it have videos to teach you about the concept, it also has quizzes and articles that will help you hone your skills and improve your overall capabilities. I will always be advertising this website as it is truly, truly amazing for learning.

The Biology content covers all content primarily needed in high school, divided into various sections.

Biointeractive Classroom Resources

Biointeractive Classroom Resources covers a large range of Biology resources that range from videos, slides, models, and so on. It is similar to a large resource library where you can find the content you need and revise for the biology concepts you need to be tested on.

A lot of the content seems to be designed for teachers, but it still serves as an extremely good source for biology lessons, sites, and presentations.

U of T Biology Resource list

The resource list from the University of Toronto provides an extensive list of Biology resources and sites, though some might be directed for University students. However, if you are interested in taking a career path in the future, you can also view the more complex sites to prepare for university, or it can also be useful if you take AP Biology in Grade 12 as it covers first-year university content.

However, most of the resources listed are also suitable and useful for high school students, especially at higher grades.
