Why is English Important?

English is a language spoken worldwide by 1.5 billion people, with approximately 400 million native speakers among them. It is the most widespread language around the world and holds its significance in professional settings, advanced technology, universities, economics, and general navigation. English serves as a connection to global affairs (Tariffs...) and a universal language to communicate and network with millions upon millions of people.

Moreover, studying English also increases one's literacy and critical thinking. English literature enhances one's understanding of different opinions and worldviews, as well as developing critical thinking and debating skills which will be extremely useful in the future. It also provides a deeper understanding of the world through writers who have accumulated wisdom over the years. From modern dystopias that have long been foretold by George Orwell's 1984, to complex dilemmas of morality narrated in Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, each hold such a deep understanding of society and the various issues that arise within it that the average person looks past. Taking in different opinions and insights of authors will certainly change how one perceives the world and avoid falling into a negative cycle of tunnel vision, which can lead to ignorance for facts that are clear to the eye.

Lastly, learning how to communicate with others properly is one of the, if not the most important skill needed to lead a successful life. Understanding objectives in jobs, persuading others in a life-changing decision, handling and managing relationships, writing resumes and job emails... these situation all require a decent skill of communication. By studying English, one will naturally learn the suitable communication strategies and appropiate grammar structure for formal situations. Some professionals even state they will reject a person if they have incorrect grammar in their applications, showing simply how important grammar is in real life.

How to help yourself  with English

Since English is one of the most important subjects in high school, have you ever wondered what you can do to help with your English skills?

The most effective and simple way is to read and write more in English. Pick up some novels or stories that you enjoy, and read through them whenever possible. While reading, take note of their composition, vocabulary, and style — then you can adopt it into your writing to give it flavour and complexity. Writing more and receiving feedback from teachers and peers also help a ton if you want to improve your writing!

There are also some websites that can facilitate your English learning. For people who might struggle with more complex English, English dictionaries such as the Oxford or Cambridge dictionaries can give you explanations on more complex words. Thesaurus provides synonyms for a wide range of words which you can use to add variety to your writing. Even though it is not recommended to rely on Grammarly and ChatGPT, they can analyze your writing individually and give you ideas to start off your writing using generative AI. However, be sure to not use these or other AI tools in formal writing assignments — only use them when practicing or brainstorming.

Other than using books and tools to help you, people around you, such as teachers and your fellow peers, can provide help in a variety of ways! Teachers will always be here if you need feedback, have any questions, or need help for improvement. Your friends and classmates can also answer your troubles and support you in times of need (even moral support!).
